An often travelled and favorite road of mine, CA 168. Here, we're heading west to CA 395, then south along the eastern Sierras toward home. Squint, and the wee town of Big Pine can be seen in the distance, which is where this 2-lane blacktop crosses 395. Beyond 395 headed west: the magic of the Sierra’s are revealed in the Sabrina Basin.
Turn about and head east, and the road will take you toward the White Mountains/Bristlecone Pine forest. Further on, there are the turns-offs onto gravel roads that will take you deep into Saline Valley, Eureka Dunes, and on to Death Valley.
As a kid I was fascinated with photographs. Look. Life magazine. National Geographic. That well-captured interplay of light and shadow...the notion of people, places and moments - all suspended in time. My first "real" camera was a Minolta Srt101. I was seduced. As a teenager, I learned to develop film while working at Wyle Laboratories in El Segundo. I still recall the smell of the developer, my eyes adjusting to the red filter light, and the sheer magic and delight of watching images begin to emerge. Life, family and a career as a teacher and psychologist intervened, not to mention a few more film cameras. Eventually, there was digital. Liberation!
