Description
This shot was taken in late March, 2010, 1-1/4 miles north of Furnace Creek on CA 190, facing east. Though not a super bloom, there was this.
The prolific and widely photographed yellow flowers in Death Valley are Desert Gold (Geraea canescens). Commonly referred to as the desert sunflower, the bright, daisy-like blossoms are famous for carpeting the desert floor and alluvial fans in massive fields of vibrant yellow during spectacular spring blossom.
The bright, "chocolate and vanilla" light-colored layers are made of fine-grained clays, siltstones, and borate minerals (like ulexite and colemanite). They are the famous "white gold" deposits that sparked Death Valley's historic borax mining boom.
