Description
This shot was taken from the perspective of another image in my Bristlecone Pine collection entitled "Pointing the Way". Far below, our steed (FJ cruiser) appears little more than a speck on the solitary road cutting through the terrain. I had shot this very scene back in September 2012, and this image is part of the review from September 2023. Rosemary remained in the truck as I s l o w l y trodded up this dolomite hillside once again. At the gravel roads junction to the left of the truck, a wee sign indicates 11,500 feet. My estimate of the climb up from the road was about four to five hundred feet. PHEW! A slow slog up, and trodding on the white dolomite stone didn’t help. The truck in the distance helps convey the vastness of this xeric alpine terrain. A stark beauty.
The Great Basin bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) trees grow between 9,800 and 12,000 feet above sea level, in xeric alpine conditions, protected within the Inyo National Forest. Limber pine (Pinus flexilis) also grow in the forest.
