“... It's getting to the point where I'm no fun anymore
I am sorry
Sometimes it hurts so badly I must cry out loud
I am lonely
I am yours, you are mine, you are what you are...”
The Barrel cacti grow into a squat tubular shape, giving it the appearance of a very spiky ribbed barrel. The genus name Ferocactus is Latin for “fierce cactus,” an apt description that will be affirmed by any who have seen the densely packed, stiff spines covering the fleshy-looking plant. The Spanish name for this plant is viznaga, a common term for fat, cylindrical cacti, which can also include Mammillaria, Escobaria, and other genera. As one would expect of such an iconic emblem of the desert southwest, these plants grow mainly in the desert, in sandy or rocky soils with little water and lots of sun.
As a kid I was fascinated with photographs. Look, Life magazine. National Geographic. That well-captured interplay of light and shadow...the notion of people, places and moments - all suspended in time. My first "real" camera was a Minolta Srt101. I was seduced. As a teenager, I learned how to develop film while working at Wyle Laboratories in El Segundo, and I still recall the smell of the developer...my eyes adjusting to the red filter light...and the sheer magic and delight of watching images begin to emerge. Life, family and a career as a teacher and psychologist intervened, not to mention a few more film cameras. Eventually, there was digital. Hah! Liberation! Photography is the creative medium that allows me to share...

We have some cactus in our solarium that we're cautious about touching, but nothing to compare to this. My hands tingle even as the move closer to the screen, all set to pull away and say ouch. A prickly personality indeed.

👍🏼 Understood, Steve. They demand respect.
