Description
In black and white, the abandoned little beach house at Lucia, California along the Big Sur coast, April 6, 2026.
Lucia is / was a vibrant little spot, hanging on the very edge of the continent along the highway CA-1. Lucia is visually memorable for the adjacent assemblage of several wee cottages (Lucia Lodge) dramatically facing the ocean. There was once a small cafe, and a little general store and gas station. Fire destroyed the cafe and store in August 2021. Landslides along CA-1 had closed through traffic headed north not far from Lucia for 2 1/2 years from '24-'26.
My notes on an existing image of this scene shot on May 19, 2006 was posted on FAA in November, 2014. That image can be found in the collection entitled The California Coast.
So much can happen in an hour, a day, let alone nearly 20 years.
In 5/06 I had written:
"A small residence along the Big Sur coast, adjacent to the small outpost of Lucia, CA. There is nothing quite like a drive up California's Big Sur coastline in the morning...the fog drifting in and up the steep cliffs. Magic!
