The many different scenes of water is what catches my eye here. The stillness where just a bit of pier is reflected, then water receding to the oncoming water and then to the waves splashing upwards. And finally the solitary figure taking it all in.

Joe Schofield replied:

As ever, thanks so much for the meaningful comment Jim!

Very nice work. I googled "Monday, Monday" - I couldn't even remember who it was by (Mamas and Papas) and when I read the lyrics, I realised that the words "Monday, Monday" were pretty much all I had ever taken in of the song! Just another love and leave song.....:-)

Artist's Description

Hermosa Beach Pier, days before Christmas. Winter is upon us.

The Hermosa Beach pier is located in the Southern California community of Hermosa Beach. It extends into the Pacific Ocean.

In 1904 the first pier was built. It was constructed entirely of wood even to the pilings and it extended five hundred feet out into the ocean. The pier was constructed by the Hermosa Beach Land and Water Company. In 1913 this old pier was partly washed away and later torn down and a new one built to replace it. This pier was built of concrete 1,000 feet (300 m) long, and paved with asphalt its entire length. Small tiled pavilions were erected at intervals along the sides to afford shade for fishing and picnic parties. A bait stand was built eventually out on the end. Soon after, about 1914, an auditorium building was constructed; it has housed various enterprises and at present the public rest rooms, the Los Angeles Life Guard Service, and the local branch of the Los Angeles County Publi...

About Joe Schofield

Joe Schofield

As a kid I was fascinated with photographs. Look. Life magazine. National Geographic. That well-captured interplay of light and shadow...the notion of people, places and moments - all suspended in time. My first "real" camera was a Minolta Srt101. I was seduced. As a teenager, I learned to develop film while working at Wyle Laboratories in El Segundo. I still recall the smell of the developer, my eyes adjusting to the red filter light, and the sheer magic and delight of watching images begin to emerge. Life, family and a career as a teacher and psychologist intervened, not to mention a few more film cameras. Eventually, there was digital. Liberation! Photography is the creative medium that has allowed me to share personal ...
