A fine morning for a walk on the beach in early January 2020. Santa Monica Bay. Ahh...things could be worse. In the distance are the Santa Monica Mountains, and from left to right the buildings of Santa Monica, Marina del Rey, and the homes along Vista Del Mar in Playa Del Rey. Oh....and the seagulls.
The Los Angeles area has some of the finest wide sandy beaches in all of Southern California. The majority of these popular strands are on Santa Monica Bay. This nearly continuous sandy shoreline spans the gap between the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the Eastern Malibu Coast below the Santa Monica Mountains. These beaches are in several different cities including Santa Monica, Marina Del Rey, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, and of course Los Angeles. As a kid I was fascinated with photographs. Look, Life magazine. National Geographic. That well-captured interplay of light and shadow...the notion of people, places and moments - all suspended in time. My first "real" camera was a Minolta Srt101. I was seduced. As a teenager, I learned how to develop film while working at Wyle Laboratories in El Segundo, and I still recall the smell of the developer...my eyes adjusting to the red filter light...and the sheer magic and delight of watching images begin to emerge. Life, family and a career as a teacher and psychologist intervened, not to mention a few more film cameras. Eventually, there was digital. Hah! Liberation! Photography is the creative medium that allows me to share...
