Sloshing through the river across two separate adjacent spots is what to expect along the Monkey Trail. The "Monkey Trail" is actually referred to as Hwy 911, and perhaps appropriately so if your are planning to cross during the wet season. By the way, plan on being equipped with WiFi, and don't plan on seeing any signs posted referring to Hwy 911. In fact, don't rely on seeing any highway signs at at all while driving in Costa Rica. That's part of the charm. We crossed the river on a few occasions with no problems, aside from the first encounter which was prefaced by pulling over, taking a deep breath and repeating that age old mantra, "what's the worst that can happen?" A small SUV 4x4 is highly recommended.
Actually, during our last crossing, a fellow driver had pulled up behind us in a small sedan. He was clearly worried, as he should well have been. He nevertheless followed us in our little Mitsubishi 4x4, and, the water near the top of his tires, he made it. December, 2022.
