A view of the Nelson Range from the abandoned Lippincott Mine. The winding gravel road leads to DryStake campground the lower left. The Racetrack Playa dry lakebed is partially seen in the center, along with "The Grandstand" dark outcroppings.

On a personal note, The “Racetrack” is among the very remote places one can find in DV, and I've camped solo there a few times. As fate would have it, this image was taken in early April, 2009, and I was one of two vehicles at the time. Not always, but in remote areas such as this I will usually make a point of saying hello to strangers - see if they may need anything I might have. In this case it was a couple, enjoying the solitude in their folding chairs. We said hello and shared names. She asked me, "Where are you from Joe?", and I replied "Near the Port of Los Angeles...San Pedro, CA." They looked at each other, broke in big smiles and laughed. As a kid I was fascinated with photographs. Look. Life magazine. National Geographic. That well-captured interplay of light and shadow...the notion of people, places and moments - all suspended in time. My first "real" camera was a Minolta Srt101. I was seduced. As a teenager, I learned to develop film while working at Wyle Laboratories in El Segundo. I still recall the smell of the developer, my eyes adjusting to the red filter light, and the sheer magic and delight of watching images begin to emerge.
